"트럼프-차이잉원 통화 수개월 준비의 산물"…대중정책 변화예고
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has made waves with his recent telephone talks with the leader of Taiwan.
Some have labeled it an early diplomatic blunder,... but a leading U.S. daily says it was a carefully-planned move aimed at keeping Beijing on its toes.
Kim Mok-yeon reports.
An intentional move that could signal the Trump administration's new, robust approach to relations with China was how the Washington Post described the president-elect's phone call with Taiwan's leader Tsai Ing Wen.
The U.S. daily also confirmed that the call between Trump and Tsai was actually planned months in advance after extensive negotiations on each side.
This comes after Trump's advisers tried to portray last Friday's conversation as a routine congratulatory call made by the Taiwanese president.
However, a number of experts say the call was probably carefully calculated,... signaling the "first sign of a recalibration" by the incoming Trump administration.
China reacted angrily to the development,... lodging an official complaint with the U.S.
In response, Trump put out two tweets,... calling Beijing out for its unilateral decision to devalue the Yuan and their building of a massive military complex in the South China Sea.
Many questions remain about the phone call but on Monday, the Obama administration reaffirmed that the United States still adheres to the "One China" policy, which does not recognize Taiwan as a sovereign nation.
White House spokesperson Josh Earnest said U.S. officials don't understand why the phone conversation took place,... but reiterated Washington's commitment to its decades-old China policy.
