Ed Hochuli has cultivated the biggest cult of any Madden NFL 23 official in the history of the game. His long-winded expository, almost fatherly explanations of controversial decisions are legendary over, and only overshadowed by the size of his arms. He's a tough act to follow for anyone to follow, particularly in the case of his own desce ndant. Shawn Hochuli will try his best next season. Hochuli's son was chosen as one of 12 first-year Madden NFL 23 officials for the 2014 season.

Shawn Hochuli worked in the the Pac-12 Conference last season, together with line judge John Jenkins, head linesman Patrick Turner and line judge Ed Walker. The fact that the largest part of the new officials hail from Pac-12 is intriguing considering the conference's shaky reputation. In 2011 the Pac-12's officiating staff was overhauled. This past season , a Pac-12 staff was responsible for the highly-publicized gaffes during non-conference contests among Wisconsin and Arizona State, and Utah and BYU.

To be fair, the exact same team played both games, however, none of those officials are expected to make the transition to this year.

There's no confirmation yet whether Hochuli is allowed to participate in games alongside his father as a side judge. Peter King raised the possibility to Madden NFL 23 vice president of officiating Dean Blandino two months ago however Blandino did not respond.

YAY ARON RODGERS: Rodgers threw five touchdown passes in the Packers winning in Monday Night Football. According to statistics, it was one of his best performances of his storied career. He is an excellent footballer.

BOO ALEX SMITH Rodgers opposite was hesitant not to throw the ball across the field until very late in the game. He was content with  his feet in the face of an admittedly tough Packers offensive line. In the end: Alex Smith was not good. Arrowhead Pride wondered why the Chiefs were unable to play Chase Daniel in the second half. It was a matter of time before he got better after the harrowing interception, but there's a valid point. The game on Monday could have been very different if Chiefs' second half offense would have shown up during the first.
