"During the presentation, Rod Fergusson invited all of the attendees to watch The Game Awards as they'll make announcements."
Blizzard have confirmed Diablo 4 is still getting Set Items, though you'll likely be waiting until post-launch to be able to use them in the game.
Game Director Joe Shely explains during a recent roundtable interview that reimaging sets in a way that works with Diablo 4 properly wouldn't be likely to be available for launch until next year. However, the team is contemplating including them as part of the live-streaming service.
"As we've been developing the game, we realized like we could evolve sets in a completely new manner that is different from what we've experienced from Diablo 3. However, we wanted additional time to incorporate them into the game in a manner that would integrate well with the rest of Diablo 4, so you will not see any sets when you first start as part of the gameplay," Shely explains. "We believe that sets are very cool and want to make them look good - so that's something we're looking towards for live play."
"There's a staff legendary in the demo that turns the spell's fireball spell into three fireballs," former director of games Luis Barriga told Polygon(opens in new tab) in the year 2019. "The difference might be that you know, a activated spell in the current version of Diablo 3 gives you bonuses up to a few thousand. I'm thinking we're developing the game at present to be a bit tighter to keep us from getting our players into that hugely escalating power-curve."
If you're not sure to the term "set", Set Items are in essence strong pieces of gear that offer the most power when put together. They're "set" as they're always offering the same advantages, and, of course they are part of the same set. They first appeared within Diablo 2, though it was in Diablo 3 that they began to become more dominant. It remains to be seen how they'll affect what happens to the Diablo 4 meta should they occur, however we have absolutely no doubt that their impact on the Sanctuary's unfurling fashion scene will be felt.
It's a bit disappointing that the Diablo 4 beta hasn't convinced me yet, but I'm looking forward to playing more (Set Items or not).
